When three-phase AC power is applied to the primary, a travelling electromagnetic flux wave is induced and moves relative to the primary. The wave induces an electric current in the conductive reaction plate. The induced electric current interacts with the magnetic flux to produce a linear force. The speed of the motor can be varied by changing the input frequency using an adjustable frequency drive.

 

The actuator utilizes a unique electromagnetic circuit design. This design allows for a motors with minimal cross section diameter of up to 1.20 inches [30.5 mm], and strokes up to 0.60 in. [15.2 mm] stroke; this size generates up to 1.12 lbs [5.0 N] of continuous force and 3.36 lbs [15 N] of peak force.  Each actuator is guided by sliding contact bushing assemblies. Voice coil actuators are ideal for applications that require quick, short moves with fast settling times.

With this in mind, encoder manufacturer POSITAL has unveiled a fully functional prototype of their new miniature multi-turn kit encoder for integrated motor feedback. With a diameter of only 22 mm and a height of 23 mm (0.87”/0.9”), the new device is the world’s smallest multi-turn kit. It features a self-powered rotation counter that does away with the need for backup batteries or complex gear systems. POSITAL’s extremely trim 22 mm magnetic Kit Encoders are designed for builders of servomotors, feedback-controlled stepper motors, microdrives, miniature robots and other machines where high-precision position feedback is required and space is at a premium.

Like their ‘big brothers’, the new 22 mm kits are reliable, accurate and simple to install. Unlike resolvers, they cover a multi-turn measurement range and provide digital output. Compared to optical kits, they are more rugged and more resistant to contamination by oil, dust or moisture. They offer 17-bit electronic resolution and a multi-turn measurement range of up to 32 bits. Vendor-neutral SSI and BiSS C interfaces are supported. Installation of the 22 mm kits is very straightforward and can be done under normal factory conditions. Integrated self-calibration simplifies commissioning. The combination of robust magnetics, high operational reliability (with an integrated temperature sensor for diagnostics), multi-turn functionality and maintenance-free operation all help to reduce the cost of ownership.

(95.3 mm) stroke of the precision ground 0.236 (6.0 mm) diameter shaft with an internal thread, is guided by a long-life plain bearing that can allow side loads up to 1 lb (4.4 N). The housing and coil ends of the motor have threaded mounting holes in the housing and coil ends for easy integration into existing and future applications. The speed of the motor can be varied by changing the input frequency using an adjustable frequency drive.

Each coil pair operates as its own voice coil.

Redundancy is a requirement on many flight systems in a special case when one coil faults, the other can be used to make the motor “fault-resistant”.

Other systems require simplified circuitry which would not allow the change of current polarity in order to change the direction, in these cases each coil can be used to drive the coil in a single direction. The challenge in manufacturing a redundant coil is ensuring the same performance no matter the coil, which requires precise manipulation of the magnetic circuit design, and the precise coil layout to ensure the identical operation and constants for each coil. This will allow the controls to seamlessly switch between the two coils.

There are two ways of accomplishing this coil redundancy. The most common way would be to generate multiple coils operating on individual magnetic circuits. This requires a longer coil and multiple magnetic circuits; however this is the most robust design and the least vulnerable to damage or interference from the redundant coil. The NCC08-18-025-2R2C is an example of the multiple coil design. An alternate method, which allows for the most compact solution, would be a multi-filar wind. This method only requires one magnetic circuit, which is why the length is shorter. In this case multiple coils are wound in the same winding space.

Highest precision and compact design

The aperture control is used to adjust a pass-through window for a power laser and makes it possible to confine a laser beam to any rectangular format. The pass-through window is formed by means of four individual apertures, which are positioned by two drives. The height and width of the window can be adjusted almost infinitely from fully closed up to a size of 25 x 25 mm (maximum open); the smallest adjustment step is 50 nm. The beam center is fixed and cannot be changed.

Driven by DC motor and precision spindle with belt deflection

Since the pairs of individual apertures must be moved synchronously to adjust the pass-through window, two individual apertures each are moved by one spindle. The aperture control is driven by a DC motor and a precision spindle with belt deflection – a design with advantages: Owing to right-hand and left-hand threads on one spindle, two counter-rotating movements can be generated with one motor. In addition, the flat design requires only a short installation length in the optical beam path. Since the pairs of individual apertures must be moved synchronously to adjust the pass-through window, two individual apertures each are moved by one spindle. In this process, the parallelism of the apertures that are arranged on opposite sides deviates only by a maximum of 10 µm.

The AC201 2 axis high performance angular displacement Digital Autocollimator System from Equipment Solutions, Inc. is a very compact high precision instrument designed to measure very small angular displacements with high sensitivity over distances to 2.0 in. (5.06 cm). The AC201 Digital Autocollimator is therefore ideal for instrumentation, tooling, and OEM manufacturers with requirements for high precision alignment, flatness, squareness of surfaces in relation to each other, detection of angular movement, shaft straightness, motion control, and other orientation measurements. This rugged and compact 1.0 in. x 1.1 in. x 1.3 in. (2.5 cm x 2.8 cm x 3.3 cm), low cost digital autocollimator can interface with a PC.

 

The AC201 Digital Autocollimator has an optical angular range of ±344 arc sec (±100 mrad), and a sensitivity of 0.2 arc sec (1.0 µrad). The laser has a beam diameter of < 0.125 in. (<3 mm) and requiring only a slightly larger reflection surface. Electrical requirements are: +5.0 VDC @ 30 mA. The AC201 Digital Autocollimator can be factory configured with one of several different interfaces including Analog, USB, SPI, or quadrature encoder. The black anodized (per MIL-A-8625C) 6061-T6 Aluminum body has 2x 4-40 mounting holes and integral electronics and connections are via a Nano D9 or USB connector.

Supplied with a Windows® application software and more than 24 ASCII commands for control and operation, the AC201 Digital Autocollimators are able to perform complex data collection and analysis. They are ideal for: Vibration analysis, mechanical and optical alignments, servo control feedback, tip & tilt measurements, settling time and stage damping analysis, and measurements needed in the manufacturing and testing of miniature mirrors and lenses, linear and rotary stages, fiber optic components, robotic components, and medical analytical devices.

Question – Can Ball Screws be any quieter?

Answer – YES! The Steinmeyer, “Quiet Series”, Ball Screws featuring innovative end caps reduces noise by 50%!

Woburn, MA – Ball screws with high leads and high linear speeds are notoriously noisy. The loading and unloading of the balls against the return is the main source of noise. With steel balls and steel returns, this cycling can create a loud “whirling” sound at high speeds, especially when using preloaded ball nuts. Steinmeyer has been researching this issue, and recently announced some important results involving process improvements that may yield benefits across most of our product range.

Meanwhile, on the design side, the innovative plastic end caps provide a solution for small diameter screws. As shown in the 3D drawing below, the steel body (blue) has an integrated flange and “through the nut” ball recirculation. The plastic end caps (gray) provide quiet return, and may also include integrated combination wipers (not shown).

Quiet Series screws are designed typically for a lead/diameter ratio greater than 0.5. Due to the high lead, they are especially well-suited for use in high speed pick-and-place actuators. The screws are available in diameters from 5 to 20 mm and leads up to 32 mm! All feature dual start threads, P5 accuracy grade, and ball nuts with zero or minimum axial play. Santa Clarita, CA —– Motion Control Tutorial – Every motion control problem begins with a need to move a certain payload over a certain distance. However, there are many types of moves possible, and determining the right motion control solution may require some calculations to match the specifications found on a given motors data sheet. Most sales engineers will ask you for three basic questions when directing you to the proper motor or motion control solution. What is the stroke or displacement required What is the force or thrust required? At what duty cycle do you plan on operating the motor? Travel Distance The travel distance is the first piece of information needed to unlock any specification, because a solution to move a few microns would utilize different motion technology from an application requiring several meters of travel. In addition to understanding the total travel required, it would be necessary to determine whether the travel is oscillatory, constant velocity, or the motion profile is defined by a pick-and-place application. Oscillatory systems typically will move back and forth at a specific frequency or range of frequencies. While constant velocity systems either need to operate for a known distance or time at a constant velocity, or they need to get a payload up to a velocity, in these cases the distance and time to accelerate up to the velocity needs to be understood and accounted for in the overall displacement. With this information you can determine the acceleration necessary to make the move. The next step is determining the amount of thrust or force required. Force is simply the amount of acceleration multiplied by the mass of the moving object. If the motion is horizontal, this equates to the mass of the payload added to the mass of the moving part of the linear motor or stage and multiplied by the amount of acceleration required by the motion. Vertical applications must add or subtract the acceleration due to gravity depending on the direction of motion.

Finally, how long is power going to be applied to the motor? Many oscillatory systems will be operating continuously, and thus would have a duty cycle of 100%, while other applications will be short bursts of power, 1 second or less, while being off for several seconds, and will have a duty cycle of less than 10%. Duty cycle is defined as the time on divided by the total time per cycle (time on + time off). Depending on the linear motor selected, the amount of force available at a duty cycle of 10% can be as much as 3 times the continuous force rating. This last piece of the puzzle helps break down the necessary components required to properly size any motion control problem.
