Santa Clarita, CA —– Motion Control – The VCS13-108-LB-01-MCF voice coil positioning stage uses H2W voice coil motor NCC13-30-108-1SH to generate a continuous/peak force of 10.8 lbs [48.0 N]/32.4 lbs [144 N] with a total stroke length of 1.3 in [31.8 mm]. The 1.0-micron resolution encoder allows for precise positioning. The load cell with signal conditioner (100 N capacity, 1 N resolution) allows for 1-100 N of push/pull force feedback. It comes supplied with a rigid recirculating ball linear bearing. The motor coil is the moving part of the assembly to reduce the moving mass of the system. Power is supplied to the motor via a high flex, high reliability flat ribbon cable.

Voice Coil Positioning Stages – Overview –

The Voice Coil Positioning Stage is a compact, small footprint positioning stage. It is ideal for closed loop positioning applications with a short stroke where intricate position, velocity, and acceleration control is necessary.

Their compact size allows them to fit into small spaces. They have very low electrical and mechanical time constants. The low moving mass allows for high accelerations of light payloads.

The ironless core coil assembly has no magnetic attractive force to the stationary magnet assembly, which reduces the load on the bearing system, which increases the life of the bearing. There are no magnetic drag forces (hysteresis), which allows for higher accelerations.

These actuators are wound in such a way that no commutation is required for motion to occur. Electrical devices such as Hall Effects are not necessary. The result is a much simpler and more reliable system.

The VCS positioning stage incorporates the latest in linear motion technology:

Motors: non-commutated moving coil (NCC) or moving magnet (NCM) voice coil motors.

Bearings: Linear guidance and stiffness is achieved by using high precision ball slides or cross roller slides. Other types of bearings and bushings are available depending on the application.

Feedback: Non-contact optical or magnetic linear encoders with a center reference mark for homing. Typical encoder output is A and B square wave signals but sinusoidal output is available as an option. Analog feedback is available via LVDT or Force Transducer.

Limit Switches: Soft limits are typically used and monitored by the controller. But, if needed, end of travel limit switches may be included at both ends of the stroke. The switches can be either active high/low (5V to 24V). The limit switches can be used to shut down the amplifier or to signal the controller that an error has occurred. The limit switches can be an integral part of the encoder or can be mounted separately if required.

Hard Stops: Hard stops are incorporated into the ends of the stage to prevent over travel damage in the event of servo system failure.

Stages can be ordered for any stroke up to 2 inches and any continuous force up to 100 lbs. The stages are built as the orders are placed, they are not stocked, as each customer requirement is different.

It should be noted that for both types of actuators (NCC & NCM) used for these stages, longer strokes are available but the efficiency or motor constant (Km) decreases as the stroke increases. This is due to the fact that the motor constant is inversely proportional to the stroke. If higher efficiency is desired for longer stroke actuators, the coil assembly can be wound as a multiphase coil and then it will have to be commutated. Please consult the factory for long stroke applications.

Motion Control – Compact Linear Induction Motor Is Available from H2W Technologies!

Santa Clarita, CA —– Motion Control – H2W engineers have developed a compact Linear Induction Motor (LMAA-04-01) that can generate 10.6 lbs [47 N] at a 15% duty cycle. Operating at 208 VAC 3-phase 60 Hz, the synchronous velocity of this LIM is 160 in/sec [4 m/s]. This LIM was designed for high speed operation; however, it can also be operated at stall (zero speed) to produce static thrust. This motor is encapsulated using high temperature 350°F [176°] potting compound which protects the components and seals it from moisture.

A non-contacting, high speed, linear motor measuring just 8.7 in. [223 mm] long x 3.0 in. [75 mm] wide x 1.7 in. [43 mm] high this LIM operates on the same principal as a rotary, squirrel cage, induction motor. They are typically used in applications that do not require positioning.

The 3-phase coil assembly can be directly connected to the AC line for single speed applications or to an adjustable frequency drive for variable speed control of the motor. The motors are reversible and can also be dynamically braked.

The laminated coil assembly is used in conjunction with a customer supplied aluminum and steel reaction plate to produce a force. A customer supplied bearing system is required to maintain the .125 in. [3.0 mm] air gap between the coil assembly and the reaction plate. The length of the reaction plate is typically equal to the coil assembly length plus the stroke.

Measure Very Small Angular Displacements Of Very Small Parts With Low Cost Digital Autocollimator

Sunnyvale, CA,   —  The AC201 2 axis high performance angular displacement Digital Autocollimator System from Equipment Solutions, Inc. is a very compact high precision instrument designed to measure very small angular displacements with high sensitivity over distances to 2.0 in. (5.06 cm). The AC201 Digital Autocollimator is therefore ideal for instrumentation, tooling, and OEM manufacturers with requirements for high precision alignment, flatness, squareness of surfaces in relation to each other, detection of angular movement, shaft straightness, motion control, and other orientation measurements. This rugged and compact 1.0 in. x 1.1 in. x 1.3 in. (2.5 cm x 2.8 cm x 3.3 cm), low cost digital autocollimator can interface with a PC.

The AC201 Digital Autocollimator has an optical angular range of ±344 arc sec (±100 mrad), and a sensitivity of 0.2 arc sec (1.0 µrad).  The laser has a beam diameter of < 0.125 in. (<3 mm) and requiring only a slightly larger reflection surface.  Electrical requirements are: +5.0 VDC @ 30 mA.  The AC201 Digital Autocollimator can be factory configured with one of several different interfaces including Analog, USB, SPI, or quadrature encoder.  The black anodized (per MIL-A-8625C) 6061-T6 Aluminum body has 2x 4-40 mounting holes and integral electronics and connections are via a Nano D9 or USB connector.

They have to be fairly small, not too heavy and maneuverable enough to get through cracks or narrow spaces to reach areas deep inside a building. Furthermore rough terrain should present no problem. These rescue robots enter and explore buildings to determine if there are gases, radiation or other life-threatening hazards, before human rescue teams can search the area. Quince has proven that it fulfills all these demands. After the severe earthquake in Japan and the subsequent nuclear disaster in Fukushima, Quince managed to reach the upper floors of the ruins of the power plant in June 2011. Quince weighs 27 kg and is equipped with four moving caterpillar drives (flippers). These flippers automatically adapt their angular position to the surface underneath – regardless of whether the robot is climbing steep stairs or crossing rough terrain. Correct ground contact is a very important prerequisite. This contact is accurately analyzed by measuring the power consumption of the flipper motors. Furthermore PSD (Position-Sensitive Device) sensors on the front and rear flippers measure the distance to the ground. In addition to a gripper arm (see fig. 2), two laser scanners can also be attached to the robot. These scanners are capable of accurately capturing the structure of the terrain.motion control robot navigates rough terrain

Additionally Quince is equipped with a “bird’s eye camera” and can travel quite fast, at 1.6 meters per second. The operator that controls the robot has to tell it which direction to take, but the robot itself determines the optimal flipper positions for crossing various surfaces, for example stairs. Newer Quince motors have additionally been equipped with a device for collecting radio-active dust or ultra-fine particles, as well as a 3D scanner. To ensure that no robot is lost, a connection to a wireless network is possible, which is the only way to navigate the robot if the connection cable breaks.

The rescue robot was developed by Eiji Koyanagi, Vice-Director of the Chiba Institute of Technology Future Robotics Technology Center (fuRO). Koyanagi started his career as a teacher – at the age of 51, he became a professor. This means that he has a completely different background than other researchers in the field of robotics. Quince has been specially designed for extreme conditions in environments where it would be too dangerous for humans. Therefore its main area of application is disaster areas. “When you develop a robot, you first have to consider the tasks that it will perform later. That is the biggest challenge,” explains Koyanagi. Hitherto eight Quince robots have been built. But before this could be done, all components had to be 100% functional. To this end, various trials were run in the large “Disaster City” training area in College Station, Texas. Quince was the only robot that successfully completed the entire obstacle course at the site as part of a RoboCup contest. In preparation for using the robot inside the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, several specific customizations were required. “The conditions in the nuclear reactor buildings are very tough. If we had attempted to send Quince in without modifications, it would probably have met its end,” says Koyanagi. Therefore the robot had to be able to survive a fall from approx. 2 m high unscathed, and had to be largely maintenance-free.

Where the motor selection was concerned, fuRO required absolutely reliable drives. The motors have to provide high power and high efficiency, yet be small and light. These requirements were precisely met by maxon motors, explains Koyanagi. Six powerful maxon motors drive the robot. The brushless EC-4pole 30 direct current motors each provide 200 W; two of these have been installed in the two main chains. The powerful 4-pole units give their all when Quince maneuvers its way across uneven terrain. Four additional motors (EC22) drive the moving chain drives (flippers). These can automatically adapt their angular position to the surface below. The 3D scanner unit of Quince is moved to the right position by an RE-max 24. Thanks to the special winding technology and the 4-pole magnets, the maxon EC-4pole drives are unbeatable when it comes to delivering the highest driving power per unit of volume and weight. The motors have no cogging torque, high efficiency, and excellent control dynamics. The metal housing additionally ensures good heat dissipation and mechanical stability. All motors of the chain drives have been combined with the GP32HP (High Power) planetary gearhead with MR encoder. This gearhead was customized by installing a large ball bearing and a reinforced motor shaft. With this power pack, Quince has no trouble managing almost any obstacle.

Featuring a 4 mm per turn, precision 2 µ backlash lead screw, typical performance specifications of the AQ140 and AQ150 linear stages include: repeatability of 5 µ, positional accuracy 8 µ, straightness 6 µ, driving parallelism 15 µ, pitching 25 arc seconds, and deflection 25 arc seconds.

Constructed of aluminum and black anodized, these stages can handle loads to 30 kg (66 lbs.) and 50 kg (110 lbs.). These low profile stages can easily be ordered in an XY or XYZ configuration. There is a knob on the back of the motor for manual adjustments or it can be replaced with an encoder. An optional servo motor, encoder, and brake are also available. These compact linear stages are easily integrated into new and existing systems and are available as with complete plug-and-play systems or with a plug-in motor driver. Linear Stage with Foldback Drive

The task of this customer-specific OEM development was to create a travel path of 150 mm in 250 mm installation space, in which the load is wider than long. The available installation space had to be completely filled with an aluminum base body in order to achieve the necessary rigidity.

Integrated ball screw with synchronous belt

The ball screw was integrated between the base body and the moving carriage plate. It was also moved downwards via a pair of synchronized pulleys with synchronous belts. The transmission error of this additional transmission element could be minimized by optimally adjusting the pre-stress, thereby resulting in only a slight increase in repeatability errors. A compromise also had to be reached on the guiding system with regard to the guiding relationship. The lateral distance between the carriages had to be greater than the distance between the carriages in the direction of travel. Less stringent requirements for straightness made that acceptable.

Longmeadow, MA Motion — Control Components – Linear Motion – Available off-the-shelf, cylindrical, self lubricating, sintered bronze bearings from LM76 feature: Very high precision (e.g +2μ to +12μ for 2mm ID bearings), high load capacity (100kg/sq cm), high speed 30,000 rpm) and rapid oscillation capabilities, low/high temperature (-60OC to +230OC), very low coefficient of friction (0.02), and low noise. These reliable, economic bearings are available in metric sizes (2 mm to 100 mm ID by 2 mm to 120 mm long) and have applications in: Appliances such as washing machines, exercise equipment, portable machine tools, toys, motors, packaging machinery, garden tools and machinery, vibration damping, and automotive equipment such as alternators.

These lifetime Self Lubricating bearings are impregnated in the sintering process with a lubricant to suit the application. Sintered bearings are available in lead free Bronze, bronze alloys and Iron. Additionally: Flanged bearings (IDs 3 mm to 60 mm by 4 mm to 60 mm long) and precision (ID tolerance ISO H7) Spherical bearings, with or without a collar, (IDs 4 mm to 12 mm by 10 mm to 23 mm ODs) are available, as well as custom sizes and designs. Because of the very low coefficient of friction these bearings show no wear after many thousands of hours of use. Standard metric cylindrical and flanged oil impregnated bearings are typically shipped from stock, Custom bearings (ID, OD, flange size, and length) can be ordered as well as special purpose alloys. Alloys include: sintered bronze, iron sintered bronze, ParaliteTM (non-migrating lubricant), and TriboloyTM (chromium, nickel, cobalt alloy for temperatures over 1000O F). TriboloyTM sintered bearings are resistant to corrosion, erosion, abrasion, and galling, and even at high temperatures they are resistant to oxidation.
