Linear Motion Application – How Do You Move Articles of Antiquity?

Very Carefully With A High Load Rail System from LM76!

motion control - linear guides

E. Longmeadow, MA – — The Boston Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) has to move articles of antiquity from one location to another. In this instance, they are moving a 5000 year old relief (hieroglyphics) weighing 8000 pounds to a new location in the Museum. Here is a frontal photo of the Relief from The Tomb of Senenuka.

Part of wall from tomb of Senenuka; nine stones fitting together and including two niches; lower left piece smooth limestone; upper far left preliminary black ink sketch; right of this sketch is a complete relief showing two seated figures; central piece has large scene of seated male on the left and other smaller male figure to the right; upper far right male figure relief outline; left of this again a scene of two seated figures at a table.

Senenuka Time of Khufu or Khafre (Maybe Dyn 5?) Overseer of the Pyramid-town of Khufu, Director of King’s wad-priests, Boundary official of a settlement, etc.

The MFA contracted CBI Consulting of Boston to design the frame and fixturing. Craig Barnes, an award winning architectural engineer called Mike Quinn of LM76 to review the linear motion application. Over the course of several weeks, LM76 and design partner Todd Kanipe designed a telescoping, high load roller/linear motion rail system that won approval. According to CBI’s Keith Bouchard, the linear rail system moves very smoothly and so far meets the expectations of this program.”

Linear Motion Application – According to MFA Antiquity Specialist Jean Louis Lachevere, “All of these moves present very real dangers to the artifact being transported. In this case, we have a 8000 pound relief which already has its problems due to age and the fact that it is limestone ( limestone is very vulnerable to the atmosphere ).” Seen from the front, the relief is straight. From the back, much of the top back is gone. Thus, the back of the relief has to be plastered so the back is flat. Pins are inserted to further reinforce the relief and then it is tipped on its back. It is then moved to its new atmospherically controlled display case. LM76’s design is used in the transfer from the dolly to the mounting rails and restraints in the display case. This 36” motion is fraught with things that can go wrong. One of the considerations is the possibility of an earthquake…any problem conceivable is taken into account.

Motion Control – Maxon drives are heading to the Red Planet with NASA’s Perseverance Rover!

Motion Control – Application – Maxon drives heading to the Red Planet!

In July, NASA will be sending its fifth rover to Mars. Its main mission is to collect soil samples that will be analyzed on Earth at a later time. The rover will also carry a helicopter that will perform the first flights on the Red Planet. maxon’s precision DC and BLDC motors will be used for numerous mission-critical tasks.

motion control - application - mars rover

motion control - maxon motorsmotion control - maxon drive to marsTaunton, MA — Motion Control Products & Application – maxon drive systems are very familiar with Mars. Our drives have been used in virtually every successful robotic mission over the last three decades. There are now more than 100 of them on the Red Planet and there are likely to be more soon. The launch window for NASA’s next mission opens on July 22nd. An Atlas V rocket will launch the new Perseverance rover on its way to Mars, where it will be searching for signs of previous life on the planet. Its most important job is to take multiple soil samples, seal them in containers and deposit them on the surface of Mars so that a future mission can return them to Earth. Several maxon motors will be used to handle the samples inside the rover. For example, maxon DC motors are installed in the robotic arm, which moves the samples from station to station. Maxon motors will also be used for sealing and depositing the sample containers.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), is carrying out the mission, and have asked maxon to produce 10 drives for the rover. As with almost all previous Mars missions, these drives are based on standard products from maxon’s catalog with modifications. For the first time, NASA is using brushless DC motors, including: nine EC 32 flat and one EC 20 flat in combination with a GP 22 UP planetary gearhead. Working closely with JPL specialists, maxon engineers developed the drives over several years and tested them thoroughly to achieve the highest standards of quality. “We’ve learned a lot from this exciting project,” says Robin Phillips, head of the maxon SpaceLab. “We now have very broad expertise in space applications and have established quality assurance processes that meet the expectations of the industry. Customers from other industries such as the medical sector, where requirements are often similar, can also benefit from this know-how.”  Space missions place the highest demands on drive systems. This includes vibrations during the rocket launch, vacuum during the journey, impacts on landing, and the harsh conditions on the surface of Mars, where temperatures fluctuate between -125 and +20 degrees Celsius and dust penetrates everywhere

motion control - maxon drive

The Perseverance rover is expected to land on Mars on February 18, 2021 – but it won’t be alone. A drone helicopter called Ingenuity will be attached to the underside of the rover. It weighs 1.8 kilograms, is solar powered and will perform several short flights, as well as take aerial images. The main goal of this experiment is to test the concept for further drones of this kind. maxon has six brushed DCX motors with a diameter of 10 millimeters controlling the tilt of the rotor blades and the direction of flight. The drives are very light, dynamic and highly energy-efficient. These properties are crucial, because every gram counts on the Mars helicopter. Flying on Mars is not easy. The atmosphere is extremely thin, roughly comparable to the conditions on Earth at an altitude of 30 kilometers. The drone helicopter has flown in a simulated test environment in the JPL laboratory. Whether it will lift off on Mars remains to be seen. First, other obstacles, such as the rocket launch, must be successful. “We hope that everything goes well and that we’ll soon see our drives in action on Mars,” says maxon CEO Eugen Elmiger. “We’re all keeping our fingers crossed.”

Motion Control – Precisely Measure Curvature and Angles with New Dual-axis Pitch and Roll Stages!

Motion Control – Dual-axis Pitch and Roll Stages!

motion control | Pitch-and-Roll Stage

OES Logo

Van Nuys, CA – Motion Control – The precise measurements of angles and the curvature of objects are easily determined using two new Pitch and Roll stages just introduced by OES (Optimal Engineering Systems, Inc.). The PR100-45-01 (pictured) is driven by stepper motors and the PR100-45-02 is driven by brushless servo motors with quadrature incremental optical encoders.

The Pitch axis (lower stage) is a high precision goniometer stage which features preloaded cross roller guides and a high ratio worm drive for smooth motion over a range of travel of +/- 45 degrees. It has a typical accuracy of 0.05 degrees and repeatability of +/- 0.01 degrees. Additionally, this axis has end-of-travel limit switches.

The 100 mm diameter Roll axis (upper stage) has a 180:1 gear ratio for smooth motion and has a precise pattern of threaded holes for fixtures or tooling. This axis has an accuracy of 0.05 degrees and repeatability of +/-  0.01 degrees. The Roll axis has a Home signal for initialization. Each axis features a calibrated scale to visually display the angle. The maximum speed with stepper motors is 14 degrees/second and 45 degrees/second with servo motors.  The knobs of the stepper motors can be replaced with optional optical encoders for position verification.

The resolution of the PR100-45-01 stepper motor driven duel-axis stage depends on the resolution of the step motor driver resolution or the optical encoder if a servo motor is used. A resolution of 0.001 degrees equivalent to 3.6 arc-sec can be achieved using a10 micro-steps per step stepper motor driver or an encoder with a resolution of 500 cycles per revolution.

The PR100-45-02 that features servo motors and optical quadrature encoders are used for very precise closed loop operation and greater speeds. The PR100-45-01 and -02 stages can be ordered plug-and-play with a fully a compatible multi-axis motion controller from OES.

Motion Control – IncOder™ Inductive Angle Encoder by Zettlex available from Electromate!

Motion Control – Inductive Angle Encoder by Zettlex!

motion control encoders

motion control - electromateVaughan, Ontario, Canada — Motion Control – Zettlex position sensors (IncOders) use non-contact, inductive technology for precision angle measurement. Rather than the bulky transformers of traditional inductive sensors, Zettlex sensors use printed circuits. This enables compact, accurate, lightweight and robust position sensors with no contacts, no delicate parts, no maintenance, no hassle – just accurate measurements – all day, every day. IncOders are ideally suited to harsh environments – where potentiometers, optical or capacitive devices may prove unreliable.

IncOders have 2 main parts – a Stator and a Rotor – each shaped like a flat ring. The large bore makes it easy to accommodate through-shafts, slip-rings, optical-fibres, pipes or cables. The Stator is powered and the Rotor is passive. The Stator contains the electronics to receive power and generate an output signal. The output signal from the Stator shows the true absolute angular position of the Rotor relative to the Stator without the need of any motion.

IncOder inductive angle encoders do not require compliant or special couplings and the Rotor & Stator can simply be screwed to the host product. Precise mechanical mounting is not required and there are no bearings. Whereas optical or capacitive angle encoders can be unreliable in harsh conditions – notably with condensation or dust – Zettlex angle encoders are generally unaffected by foreign matter and IP67 rated versions are available. Unlike capacitive devices, there is no need to earth the Rotor or Stator. Robust, hard-anodized aluminium alloy housings and monolithic constructions are used throughout. There are no contacting, delicate or wearing parts, so there is no need for periodic replacement, service or maintenance. In other words, IncOder angle encoders are true ‘fit and forget’ devices.

Features include:

  • Robust Angular Position Measurement for Extreme Environments
  • High-reliability Inductive Angle Encoder Technology
  • Simple installation; ‘fit and forget’ technology
  • Non-contact technology for high reliability in extreme environments
  • Proven in Aerospace, Defense, Medical & Industrial applications
  • Over 4 million product configuration options available

Motion Control – Protection Against Contamination: Breathing Clean Air!

Motion Control – Protection Suit Motor!

Maxon DC motors are used in the blower components of high-quality protection suits.

motion control Maxon Motor

motion control - maxon motorsMaxon was selected for the compact and lightweight DC motor design, ironless winding, strong magnet and producing very little vibration and noise output. Most importantly, a brushless DC motor was mandatory as a brushed motor may cause sparks that would ignite within the suit. When designing the suit, special attention was given to the placement of the blower unit sewn inside the suit, to avoid the need for heavy straps or air supply hoses. A Li-Ion battery provides more than four hours of operation of air supply with a flow up to 600 liters per minute.Taunton, MA -Motion Control – Protection suits containing an air blower element that fills the entire suit with clean air, have been used by health professionals when faced with contaminated environments. The COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented situation where these type of suits have been utilized. Maxon DC brushless motors are found inside these specialized suits. The DC motor is efficient, high-speed and robust.
