Linear Motion Application – Loading Dock’s Corrosion Problem – Solved by LM76!

Linear Motion Control Application – Loading Dock’s Corrosion Problem – Solved by LM76!

LM76

E. Longmeadow, MA – Linear Motion Control – Application

The Problem –

Linear Motion Control - LM76 Application - Loading Dock Problem Solved!

An LM76 customer is a manufacturer of loading dock ramps. These motion control systems are installed in every state and experience all climates and conditions. Each dock section employs a 1″ shaft and linear bearings for length adjustment. Delivery trucks are side-loaded so the platform is adjusted outward to meet the truck body so loaders/unloaders have a safe walkway between building and truck. If the ramp cannot be properly adjusted because its rusted, frozen solid, gaps between the loading dock and the truck body become fall-through hazards for workers.

Why is this system failing? In many northern facilities, accumulated snow and ice are sprayed down with glycol and then salt. The system originally used Rc60, 1060 steel shafting and standard steel shelled, 52 100 linear ball bearings. A bad choice for such a tough, corrosive environment. Quickly, these systems were rendered useless, frozen in place, and hazardous.

The Answer –

Linear Motion Control - LM76 Application - Loading Dock Problem Solution!

LM76 was called to review the situation and asked to come up with a recommendation. Given that their customers had a very large installed base, the cost of changing out the design format with a new design was out of the question. Thus, LM76 had to come up with the best possible fix that would allow for a fast and uncomplicated field retrofit package.

First, LM76 changed out the original steel shaft with a 44c stainless steel shaft. Although the 440c is more corrosive resistant than the steel, it has carbon introduced into its chemistry so that it can be case hardened (required for linear bearings). For additional hardness (fromRc60 to Rc78) and superlative corrosion resistance we coated the shaft with a special thin dense chrome. For a direct plug-in bearing LM76 chose a 440c stainless steel linear ball bearing with special scraper seals.

Motion Control Application – Shakespeare In a New Light With Flat, Brushless Motors!

Since 2011 audiences can see plays in a whole new light after a literally revolutionary development in theatre lighting with flat, brushless motors playing a leading role.

Maxon EC45 Flat Brushless Motor is used to control Stage Linhting

Maxon Logo

Fall River, MA -Motion Control Application – The RSC Lightlock was developed by Vince Herbert, head of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Lighting Department, to address a problem that has plagued lighting designers for years – the momentum of heavy, remote-controlled spotlights. Until now using flexible, lightweight support structures for these lights was out of the question, since attempting to stop would set the whole gantry swinging after each motorized movement, sending spotlights all over the stage and ruining the performance. The only way to use large moving lights was to hang them from heavy-duty mounting infrastructures – which made accessing the lights a lengthy, dangerous and costly process, severely restricting directors’ choices when deciding how to stage a production.

The RSC Lightlock prevents unwanted oscillation on lightweight structures by invoking Newton’s third law of motion – the law of reciprocal actions. When the light needs to stop moving, a counterweight on an internal disc swings in the opposite direction to its movement, nullifying the momentum.

Maxon EC45 Flat Motor

The heart of stage lighting

Incredibly, the heavy counterweight necessary is rotated by a flat, brushless maxon motor just 90mm in diameter. It is irreplaceable in the role, as maxon senior sales engineer Paul Williams explains: “The EC 90 Flat was selected because the Light lock requires something small, high performance – an above all – precise. If the disc is rotated even slightly too little or too much, the whole principle that makes the Light lock so successful goes the window”. The small motor operates with such speed and exactitude that even with sudden, dramatic movements, the Lightlock can cancel out all unwanted motion in under two seconds.

Mervyn Thomas, director of Lightlock Ltd, the company engaged to produce the RSC Lighlock, says: “The RSC Lightlock allows greater freedom of stage lighting creativity, which could mean we see entirely new slants on old plays. It allows simpler and safer rigging opportunities because the moving light fixture can be now rigged from simple cable suspensions, meaning the crew can maintain and rig the fixture at floor level and simply raise it the desired working position. “The principle behind it is blindingly simple; the design involved is extremely clever. With over a thousand theatre enthusiasts in the house, the technology powering the RSC Lighlock has to work perfectly, every time. That’s why we chose maxon.” Mr. Williams adds.

Motion Control Automation – EC-4 Pole 32 HD with Planetary Gearhead!

The new maxon EC-4pole 32 HD motor has been designed for extremely rough operating conditions, particularly applications in deep drilling. This 480 W motor can withstand 200 °C, 1000 G, -5000 m and 1700 bar.

Maxon motion control EC32 Hight Temp Motors are Ideal for Deep Hole Drilling

Maxon Logo

Fall River, MA — Motion Control Automation – Deep drilling technology (called “downhole drilling” in the field of oil and gas exploration) makes it possible to recover oil and gas from depths of more than 2500 m. By combining deep drilling with directional drilling (dynamic position alignment of a bore in the earth), previously unreachable oil reserves are being opened up, with drilling depths of approx. 5000 m and drill lengths of up to 11000 m. The development of specialized electronics and drives has made it possible to better monitor and control many functions across the entire drilling process. For instance, it is now possible to dynamically measure and adjust the position of the drill head during the drilling process. Diverse deep drilling tools also use hydraulic valves or flaps that are operated by electromechanical drives. The temperatures and pressures at these depths, combined with the strong vibrations that occur during the drilling work, present unique challenges for the use of electronic drives.

The different versions of the EC-4pole 32 HD are designed for operation in air or in oil (flooded in hydraulic oil). The power rating depends on the surrounding medium and amounts to 220 W in air and, due to the much higher heat flow, 480 W in oil. They are designed for ambient temperatures of more than 200 °C and atmospheric pressures of up to 1700 bar. The Ø 32 mm motors must also be able to withstand vibrations of up to 25 grms as well as impacts of up to 1000 G (1000 times the acceleration due to gravity at the earth’s surface). As an example, a Formula 1 vehicle is exposed to approximately 2 G and fighter jets are exposed to approximately 13 G. The motors feature high efficiency (up to 89% in air, more than 80% in oil), making them ideal for use in battery-operated applications. With their detent-free running properties, they have excellent control characteristics and are suitable for high-precision positioning tasks in outer space, even at low speeds.

Maxon motion control EC32 Hight Temp Motors are Ideal for Deep Hole Drilling

The EC-4pole 32 HD is ideal for use in environments with extreme temperatures, subject to high vibration, or under ultra-high vacuum. This means the motors can also be used in aerospace applications, e.g. for gas turbine starters, for the generators of jet engines, for regulating combustion engines, or for exploration robots. For the use of the motor in conjunction with a gearhead, maxon offers the GP 32 HD, a powerful and robust planetary gearhead.

Motion Control – Maxon’s High-Performance MAXPOS 50/5 Controller!

Motion Control- Maxon motor launches the MAXPOS 50/5. This compact EtherCAT Slave unveils unprecedented possibilities as far as precision, dynamics, and synchronization are concerned. It also ensures reliability and durability even under harsh conditions. More than 20 years of experience in motion control have been incorporated into this latest technology in positioning controller.

Maxon motion control MAXPOS Controller

Maxon Logo

Fall River, MA — Motion Control Controller – By their design, the ironless maxon DC brushed motors and brushless (maxon EC) motors are ideal for applications demanding high dynamics and longevity. Typical areas are robotics and applications in the medical industry or in specialized machine manufacturing. In the past when particularly high requirements were called for, the controller used or its limited integration capabilities to the master occasionally imposed limitations due to its inability to keep pace with the high dynamics of the motors. With the new MAXPOS 50/5 motion controller, these core motor properties can now be ideally utilized. Thanks to the latest FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) technology, highest control cycle rates can be achieved with minimally short cycle times at the same time. For trajectory planning, sophisticated motion control tasks with a current controller clock speed of 100 kHz and an effective communication cycle time of 100 μs can be achieved with a suitable EtherCAT master. Distributed Clocks Support as well as the endorsement of CoE (CAN Application Layer over EtherCAT) with «Cyclic Synchronous Modes» perfectly suit these purposes. As an alternative, profile-based operating modes for position and velocity are also available. In addition, the outstanding processing power provides field-oriented sinus commutation of brushless motors (maxon EC) up to a speed of 200,000 rpm.

Full connectivity

A multitude of feedback possibilities permit the use of a wide range of permanent magnet-activated DC motors with encoder and brushless motors (maxon EC) with digital Hall sensors and encoders up to 250 Watts. The wide supply voltage range from 10 to 50 VDC and the output power capability of 5 A continuous and 15 A peak current opens a broad application field. Two different encoders can be used simultaneously allowing for dual loop control of the master to compensate for mechanical backlash and elasticity of the drive system. This is ideal for applications with high demand on precision. The spectrum ranges from digital incremental encoders to analog sinus-cosinus incremental encoders up to absolute encoders with SSI, EnDat2.2, or BiSS-C interface. Of course, also galvanically isolated I/Os are on board to enable integration of diverse peripheral components, such as limit or reference switches.

All-around protection and easy operation

The MAXPOS 50/5 positioning controller also comes with extensive protective circuitry against overcurrent, excess temperature, undervoltage and overvoltage, voltage transients, short-circuits in the motor cable as well as loss of feedback signal. Motor and load can be optimally protected with adjustable current limiting.

The newly designed operating concept for the graphical user interface «MAXPOS Studio» together with well-established tools, such as Startup Wizard or automated Regulation Tuning ensures easy and intuitive commissioning. Additional aids include the Diagnostic Wizard for troubleshooting or a freely-configurable data recorder to plot various process data. Plus, to assist the customer in attaining the ideal matched drive system in the shortest possible time, a comprehensive document is provided. The entire configuration can be carried out via USB or Ethernet.

The low inertia, ± 12 VDC to ± 24 VDC, @1 amp, voice coil motor of the LFA-3 Linear Focus Actuator has very low electrical noise, 3 mm (0.118 in.) travel, and 813.5 Ncm continuous force (6.0 ft-lbs) 4067 Ncm peak (30 ft-lbs). It is clean room compatible and can be operated in a horizontal or vertical orientation. Standard lens “C” mounts are provided on both the stator and translator elements, and DIN standard microscope objective adapters are available. For easy mounting of the actuator, mounting holes are on several surfaces.

For easy integration into a new or existing application the matching SCA824 Linear Servo Controller is available from Equipment Solutions. It is a high performance single axis DC motor controller and amplifier that was developed for applications requiring high temporal and spatial servo precision.

Poor Self-Alignment/Compliant Very Good

At first glance, Black Racer linear bearings wipe the floor with linear ball bearings. However, linear ball bearings provide the lowest coefficient of friction for mechanical bearings – only surpassed by air bearings. Linear ball bearings are more compliant than sleeve bearings, thus they are more forgiving in applications where shaft parallelism is not exact. Linear ball bearings offer more self-alignment capability than sleeve bearings. Although Black Racer bearings are direct drop-in replacements for inch linear ball bearings, you should call LM76 to ensure your application is a good candidate.
