Updates deliver twice the control performance of prior versions, while enabling system-wide third party product configuration to be handled by the integrator

Vaughan, Ontario, Canada — Motion Control –Kollmorgen introduces Kollmorgen Automation Suite™ (KAS) software version 2.8 and AKD servo drive platform firmware version 1.12. The additions include a new higher performance version of the AKD PDMM, enhancements to the coordinated motion programming blocks and additions to the EtherCAT configuration tool. This enables OEM’s who utilize Kollmorgen’s automation and drive systems to deliver differentiated machines with greater system design flexibility, performance capability, and ease-of-use.

The flagship enhancement to this version of Kollmorgen Automation Suite and AKD PDMM is a higher power version of the integrated Multiaxis controller/drive dubbed ‘M1.’ The M1 doubles the control performance of the standard PDMM and allows for more axes at faster update rates. It can control 30+ axes of motion, where the standard PDMM is equipped to control up to 16-axes. Alternatively, when compared with the standard PDMM in an application with the same amount of axes, this means most applications will be able to run twice as fast based on system load testing, which is particularly helpful in synchronized and coordinated systems that rely on microsecond timing,” says Reid Hunt, Drives and Control Products Manager.

For material forming applications this means more accurate path motion, which is critical for accurate cutting and bending. For packaging, food, and converting applications, it means more accurate web tracking, sealing, gluing, cutting, and slitting. All of this is critical for today’s more complex consumer packaging. With coordinated motion blocks and enhanced capabilities, such as three-axis coordinated linear motion as standard, KAS is an ideal solution for more applications than ever before. A template project complete with preconfigured motion blocks, automation code and GUI code helps users get started with coordinated motion. This eliminates the need to control the timing and position of individual axes. It also enables the programmer to command motion in free space and just specify the end position and path.

“It is common to pair a PC running some front-end application code with an automation controller to handle the synchronization of trajectories and machine automation,” explains Hunt. “UDP is a simple communication protocol that allows for the fast transit of data between devices. Multiple KAS controllers can also be linked together using these communications protocols for a modular machine approach.”

Motion Control Voice Coil Motors & Voice Coil Position Actuators!

Motion Control – Akribis Systems Voice Coil Motors & Voice Coil Position Actuators Available from Electromate!

Electromate - Akribis Motion Control Voice Coil Motors and Actuators

Motion Control - Electromate-Logo

Woodbridge, Ontario, Canada — Motion Control – A “voice coil” is a generalized term that refers to any galvanometer-like mechanism that uses a solenoid to move an object back-and-forth within a magnetic field.

Voice coil actuators, or non-commutated DC linear actuators, consist of a permanent magnetic field assembly (permanent magnets and ferrous steel) and a coil assembly. The current flowing through the coil assembly interacts with the permanent magnetic field and generates a force vector perpendicular to the direction of the current. The force vector can be reversed by changing the polarity of current flowing through the coil.

Voice coil actuators are typically used in focusing applications, oscillatory systems, mirror tilting, and miniature position control.

Electromate offers a full family of Voice Coil Motors & Voice Coil Modules from Akribis Systems. Features include:

  • Direct drive, zero cogging, and zero backlash
  • Low coil mass with very fast response and bandwidth
  • No contact between coil and core movement (no wear and tear)
  • Cylindrical or rectangular shape
  • A variety of Voice Coil Motors and Voice Coil Modules (Position Actuators)

Electromate’s New Harmonic Drive Gearhead Website!

Electromate and Harmonic Drive Introduce a New Website!

Motion Control - Electromate-Logo

Woodbridge, Ontario, Canada – Motion Control – Automation – Motion Control – Harmonic Drive® & Electromate have just launched a new joint company website to showcase the latest Harmonic Drive® Gearhead products & technology.

Located at http://electromate.harmonicdrivegearhead.com/, the new website features the following:

Harmonic Drive® gearing utilizes a unique operating principle which is based upon the elastic mechanics of metals. The greatest benefits are the zero-backlash characteristics and the weight and space savings compared to other gears because our gear mechanism consists of only three basic parts. They are the: Wave Generator, Flexspline and Circular Spline.

Harmonic Planetary gears have simultaneous meshing between the sun gear and planet gears and between the planet gears and the internal gear. The sun gear is connected to the motor and a carrier, supporting the planet gears, is connected to the output. Single stage planetary gears can achieve reduction ratios up to 10:1. Ratios above 10:1 utilize a two stage design where the carrier of the first stage drives the sun gear of the second planetary stage.

Motion Control Made Easy Using Maxon EPOS Controllers!

EPOS2 Positioning Controllers support additional Platforms.

Maxon motion control EPOS Positioning Controllers

Maxon Logo

Fall River, MA -Motion Control – The maxon motor EPOS2 motion controllers for DC brushed and brushless motors are enhanced by even more possible fields of applications. Deployment of computer-based drive motion control rather than traditionally used PLC systems are becoming more and more prevalent in practice. To stay ahead of this trend, maxon has updated the EPOS2 libraries to support CANopen interfaces from Kvaser and NI-XNET, in addition to our existing solutions (NI, IXXAT, Vector). In additon, new opportunities unfold for computer platforms with serial communication via USB or RS232 under Windows or Linux. The existing libraries for Intel/AMD (Windows 32/64-Bit, Linux 32-Bit) are further extended with a Linux 64-Bit version. Additional support of 32-Bit ARMv6/v7 solutions allows the broad scale use of trend platforms, such as Raspberry Pi or BeagleBone. True to the principle “Easy-to-use POsitioning System”, simple and fast incorporation into a wide range of solutions with extended, no cost, libraries is supported.

With today’s controller architectures a variety of motion control components from various suppliers are used. Therefore, easy integration into the superior master system plays a crucial role in the success. By means of extensively documented maxon libraries, integration of EPOS2 slave drive controllers takes no time and makes elaborate interface programming obsolete. Customers can fully focus on their main task; the development of their application. A wide range of supported systems permit a selection of the ideally suited master.

Webinar – EtherCAT as a Master Machine Control Tool

Join us for a Live Webinar Presented by Galil Motion Control

March 3, 2015 11:00am EST

Motion Control MCA-Webinar-3-3-2015

Electromate is proud to be a sponsor of this interesting and important Webinar.

There is an increasing demand in the automation and motion control industries for a localized motion control solution that can coordinate motion between multiple remote components.  Previously, field bus protocols such as Modbus or Ethernet/IP have been implemented to address remote I/O connectivity.  Although successful in moving data across automation networks, these protocols lacked the real time performance necessary for a distributed motion control system.
The EtherCAT communication protocol provides a high speed, low overhead communication scheme that allows efficient, deterministic communication between motion controller and remote components.  Based on CANOpen and streamlined specifically for point to point transmission of real time data, the EtherCAT standard is quickly becoming the preferred choice for centralized control of tightly coupled motion between remote components.  This presentation is aimed at designers of automation and motion control systems with a basic understanding of Ethernet/IP and EtherCAT communications.  Topics will include an overview of the communication scheme, physical layout and applications where EtherCAT is the right solution.
